UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
