The royal figure gives up his designation as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
Prince Andrew has been under increasing scrutiny over his associations with Jeffrey Epstein.

He is relinquishing his designations, including the the Duke, he has stated in a individual message.

He has been under increasing scrutiny over his links with disgraced financier the financier, with requests for the royal household to take action against him.

That now looks to have led to the figure deciding to voluntarily return his honors and to relinquish membership of the prestigious order.

In his statement he said he continued to "strongly deny the accusations against me".

"In discussion with the monarch, and my direct and broader family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of the monarch and the monarchy," said a announcement from Prince Andrew.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my kin and land first.

"I stand by my resolution five years ago to stand back from royal engagements.

"With His Majesty's consent, we think I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer employ my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said earlier, I firmly dispute the claims against me."

The royal has encountered a number of issues, among them a lawsuit he resolved with an accuser, questions about his money matters and his association with an accused foreign agent.

He will continue to be a prince - but will cease to be the the Duke, a honor received from his the late Queen, the Queen Elizabeth II.

The prince had already ceased to be a "active member" and had forfeited the use of his royal style and no longer participated at state occasions. His position now will be even more lessened.

His ex-wife will be known as Ferguson and no longer the Duchess, but their offspring will carry on to have the title of princess.

The royal has been under intense attention over his connections with notorious figure Jeffrey Epstein, more recently including doubts about when he had truly severed communication.

In his BBC Newsnight interview, the royal had said that he had cut off all connections with Epstein after they had been photographed together in the city in December 2010.

But correspondence sent in early 2011 later emerged suggesting that the prince had in private stayed in contact with Epstein, such as sending a note: "Keep in close touch and we'll have further interactions soon!"

There had been increasing displeasure in the royal household at the scandals that persisted to surround the figure.

Next week a late publication by Virginia Giuffre will be published which is likely to cast additional attention on the royal's involvement with the plaintiff and Epstein.
