The Reze Arc Movie Leads American Box Office in First Weekend

Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? Coming after the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100 million mark globally, reaching a global total of over $108 million in its opening frame. This feature surpassed Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White ($9M).

Strong American and Worldwide Earnings

The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a straightforward follow-up of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in over $18 million domestically after a robust $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5M Sunday take. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced feature grossed $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million via Sony ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million stateside). Official totals are still pending from Sony its official box office total.

Parallels to Previous Successful Anime Films

Specialist agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned thirty-four million dollars in the North America in the year 2022 and started with a similar $18M domestically. The new film's first weekend is in line with that marker, while its $108 million international sum is now positioned slightly below that movie's $166.6 million overall box office. While it is improbable Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will achieve the numbers of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a huge win for the distributor.

Fan Engagement Efforts Drive Performance

The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged fan engagement to boost their leadership at the animated movie market. This film's promotional efforts launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, and later included a major presence at New York Comic Con including never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and popular figures too after the final day of the event.

What’s Next

2025 stands as a significant period for animated films, and for the studio, which has an additional anime film premiering in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
