The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
