During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he struggles with the control of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
