The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
