The Gunners' Debated Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude This Coming Year

The North London club has confirmed that its disputed sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will expire in June this upcoming year.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, said to be worth around £10m per year, began in 2018 and has since been heavily criticized.

Such scrutiny stems from accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in continuing hostilities in the eastern region of the bordering Congo.

In February, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by not arranging a meeting with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda serves as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a public entity.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

Nonetheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and eco-friendly travel, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” declared an club announcement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's ambition to become an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while delivering community soccer programs that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches develop their skills and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the protest movement Arsenal Peace Advocates holding rallies outside the North London venue during the initial Champions League semi-final match against Paris Saint-Germain in late April.

Activists unveiled a banner that read “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to cover up the Rwanda branding on kits.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

Around that time, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid entered a new agreement for the same period that has caused the emblem appearing on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
