A group of six quirky but brave kids fall into the path of a colossal and fearsome supernatural darkness that has infiltrated our realm from the farthest reaches of shadow. They must spend their lifetimes battling it, experiencing terror upon terror in the ordeal.

A Resonant Premise with a Fresh Spin

This is the plot, broadly speaking, of the master of horror’s seminal work It (a standout in his career; no arguments). It parallels of the celebrated author’s heir Joe Hill’s new horror doorstopper, in which a close-knit group call forth the age-old, utterly malevolent dragon King Sorrow from the Abyssal Void to help them defeat some villains. Unsurprisingly, their otherworldly invocation goes awry.

Acknowledging a Family Heritage

Joseph Hillström King launched his profession striving diligently to avoid any connection from his renowned parent, using the pseudonym he continues to employ and avoiding meeting his agent (he exhibits a strong similarity to his parent). Yet with this recent release, he embraces it. Several quotes that consciously reflect some of his father’s iconic (that classic opening line); a moment that brings to mind a signature King element (a battle of wits). In this whopper of a novel, Joe Hill takes pleasure in his family connection, and we delight along with him.

Meet the Protagonists

Focusing on the companions: five of them are pupils at the fictional the esteemed institution in Maine. First is Arthur, studious and gifted, solving historical enigmas in his leisure hours; another key figure, rich, sharp, and inclined to bulldoze obstacles in his path; twins Donna and Donovan; the stunning Allie herself. Then we have Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but emerges as crucial of their band as they dabble, somewhat credulous, partly skeptical, in supernatural practices.

The Pivotal Ritual

Arthur is, due to circumstances beyond his control, obliged to take prized manuscripts from his cherished academic collection by a group of neighborhood thugs. This tears at his bookish heart, notably because he’s made to take the institution’s prized and unsettling title: the diary of adept this enigmatic character (condemned “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the cover is made from his skin). The intrepid group examine the log, discover they could summon what Crane describes as a “arrogant beast to help Arthur out with his coercion issue – and occupy the subsequent narrative facing the fallout. The dragon will indeed rid them of those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they must select a fresh offering every twelve months or fall prey to the beast. As Arthur later puts it: “You plant seeds of destruction, all you get is further monstrosities.”

Narrative Fluidity and Creative Range

Covering a generation, Joe Hill transitions with effortless ease between genres: as the allies strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, in different ways, choosing undeniably wicked targets to immolate, or searching for methods to kill the dragon themselves, we go from page-turner to shadowy tale, black-ops torture to romance to terror. My favorite genre switch was to a quest story, far beneath the surface below Cornwall, a section tinged by JRR Tolkien that was magnificently horrifying.

A Rich Canvas of Fear and Hope

There are trolls – those living under bridges and digital trolls, properly scary and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and treacheries, breath-taking moments of courage and scenes of dreadful evil, both mortal and otherworldly. This is a remarkable achievement: a frightening tale that is above all a paean to the imagination, and to devotion and companionship. “We required a narrative to trust and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the allies sit around the table, preparing to summon their beast into being with the strength of their collective will.

In the author’s own words in his opening statement: “This is dragon territory”. Do not overlook this.
