Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests from Iran and Egypt
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup will continue unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the match venue.
“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Legal Background of Formal Complaints
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance on Flags and Banners
The international federation holds full authority of stadiums during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to showcase the city's proud history of advocating for inclusion and equality.
- A design contest is underway to create images to commemorate the event.
- Organizers are committed to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the city during the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest is home to a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our part of the country,” the statement concluded.
