Liverpool Refuses to Abandon Offensive Approach Despite Recent Slump, Insists Slot
Arne Slot has stated that the club's hierarchy share his views regarding the recent downturn and he has no intention of discarding their offensive approach in quest for a turnaround. The manager conceded that six unsuccessful results in seven outings was unacceptable ahead of the weekend fixture with Villa.
Growing Expectations Throughout Challenging Phase
The manager acknowledged the expectations were high before his altered lineup suffered Carabao Cup elimination against Crystal Palace. However, he maintained that this urgency to stop the losing streak is not coming from the club's ownership or executive leadership following a summer transfer outlay of nearly £450 million.
"We share common perspectives," stated the manager, whose team next week face the Spanish giants in the Champions League and visit Pep Guardiola's side in the English top flight.
Player Depth Continues Unquestioned
The coach is convinced his team "possess an exceptional group if they are completely available and fully prepared for the schedule ahead". He mentioned that the summer investment in players such as the German international and the forward, who is likely to miss out again against Villa through physical problems, had left the club "in a strong situation for the short-term future and the years to come".
Team Cohesion Issues
When questioned about why his team were struggling to integrate, he answered: "You don't really help me. 'Why, why, why?' I provide reasons and people say I'm coming up with excuses. I can come up with five or six reasons why we are underperforming or experiencing losses as we do but, as I consistently state, there are insufficient justifications to have a run of form as we had now."
- Regardless of whether I could come up with numerous reasons
- When you are Liverpool you cannot lose
- The reality is six losses from seven matches
Defensive Numbers
Only the Clarets (twenty-one) have conceded more clear opportunities from regular play this season than Liverpool (nineteen). The league leaders, the Gunners, have conceded only two. Yet Liverpool's coach rejects the defense has been too vulnerable and claims there is no reason to abandon offensive philosophy for a defensive approach after 10 games without a clean sheet.
"From my perspective we don't giving up numerous openings so I don't see a reason to change our playing style totally but we need to do better in preventing goals," he said.
Specific Instances
"Against Manchester United, how many openings did we give up? Versus the German side when we were leading 3-1, we barely allowed a attempt on goal. In each fixture we played until now we haven't allowed a many opportunities. Absolutely not. We do concede a bit more than last season but that stems from us being trailing by a goal so you take a bit more risk. But typically I don't feel that our challenge is that we give up too many openings. Our problem is we are unable to finish the openings we produce."
