As an individual enters counselling sessions, they often appear composed and prepared to begin the day. Yet through sessions with this person for some time, I recognize reality resides behind a composed appearance.
The person shares that last night, they'd poured themself "only one serving" to relax after a stressful day. A single drink became two, then even more. This is a routine they have become accustomed to; a private custom that enables the individual "disconnect" away from the constant worries that consume their mind as the day finally comes to an end.
Growing Trend: Relying on Substances to Manage Worry
This story reflects something that I'm observing at a growing rate among clients. Being a counsellor, it's clear a notable development: an increasing percentage of adults that are relying on alcohol to cope with their stress.
Research shows that approximately over a third of people who consumed alcohol reported doing so to relieve pressure and 18.5% to deal with worry.
Recognizing Contemporary Distress Exposure
We are living in an era of known as contemporary stress triggers. Never have we been so frequently reminded of crisis, tensions and turmoil. Despite we turn off our devices, the concerns remain of financial strain, employment uncertainty, ecological anxiety and the emotional fatigue that results from being so powerless.
