The child of previous South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related allegations at the commencement of her trial in the port city of Durban city.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being charged over statements she posted on online platforms several years back during fatal unrest in South Africa that followed the arrest of her parent.

A week of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been accused of fuelling this violence and confronts allegations of incitement to commit terrorism and public disorder.

History of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were focused in the regions of Gauteng region and KZN and came after the ex-leader's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was holding office.

She has always rejected the charges against her, with her attorney in the past labelling the government's case as insufficient.

She has also consistently said the charges against her were an bid to settle political grievances with her dad after he established his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Case Arguments

This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "political and kinship targeting" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A handful of followers from her political organization, the political party, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has stated that the proof presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Digital comments from 2019 form the core of the government's case
  • Violent unrest in recent years resulted in significant casualties and financial destruction
  • The defendant faces multiple counts of provocation to unrest
  • Judicial hearings are anticipated to continue for several weeks

The court case continues as both sides present their evidence before the judge in what is anticipated to be a highly monitored legal battle with substantial political implications for South Africa.
