Chicago White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Deal.
In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Incentives
The contract includes a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.
Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for earning the MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.
The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, bolsters a emerging lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
